Craig Cole, MD, To Highlight Racial Disparities Of Disease

On Wednesday, June 10, 2020, the public is invited to participate in a free virtual educational program dedicated to multiple myeloma. The event, hosted by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, is designed for African Americans and will discuss the symptoms of multiple myeloma, therapies, and communicating with your healthcare team.
From 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., participants will hear from Craig Cole, MD, with MSU Health Care’s Breslin Cancer Center as well as Lauren Hamel, PhD with the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University. The speakers will discuss the basics of myeloma, how the disease progresses, and emerging therapies in treatment of multiple myeloma. Dr. Hamel will discuss tools to use when talking with your doctor to properly advocate for yourself.
According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, African Americans have roughly twice the incidence of myeloma as white Americans, with recent studies finding that African Americans are also less likely to receive the latest myeloma treatments or combination therapies, and more likely to encounter delays in receiving treatment, including transplants. Caregivers and family members are encouraged to join.
